For the Britland family, Batteries Plus is more than a business. It is a shared journey built on passion, trust, and working side by side as a family.
Joe, Karen, and Josh Britland own and operate a Batteries Plus location in Seekonk, Massachusetts, and are now leading the brand’s expansion into Rhode Island through a new three-unit franchise agreement. Their growth includes the first-ever Batteries Plus store in Rhode Island, along with two additional locations planned for Massachusetts.
A Family Path to Franchise Ownership
Joe Britland had long been interested in franchising, but it was Josh’s enthusiasm that brought the opportunity into focus.
Josh joined the Seekonk Batteries Plus store as an associate in 2013. With a background in automotive mechanics, he quickly found a fit in the brand’s hands-on, problem-solving environment. Over the next decade, he worked his way up to store manager, gaining deep operational experience and a strong connection to customers.
“So this is really what drove us to franchising,” said Joe. “Josh worked here for so long, and he was so energized about Batteries Plus. He talked about it constantly and always wanted to own one.”
In late 2023, the Britlands officially became franchise owners, stepping into business ownership together.
Growing a Balanced Business
Since taking over the Seekonk store, the Britlands have focused on strengthening both retail and commercial services. That strategy is paying off.
When the family first acquired the location, commercial business accounted for roughly 30 percent of sales. Today, the store is approaching a 50/50 balance between commercial and retail customers.
This growth reflects rising demand across the region for one-stop power solutions, including:
- Batteries for vehicle fleets and commercial equipment
- Lighting solutions for businesses and facilities
- One-stop power support for municipal and organizational needs
Working Together as a Family
For Josh, working alongside his parents has been a defining part of the journey.
“I’ve always enjoyed Batteries Plus. Every day is different,” said Josh. “Working with my parents has been great. I get to work alongside them every day, and it has changed me a lot over time.”
Together, the family brings complementary strengths to the business. Josh oversees daily store operations and sales, while Joe and Karen focus on strategy and financial planning behind the scenes.
Expanding Into Rhode Island
The Britlands recently signed a three-unit development agreement that will bring Batteries Plus into Rhode Island for the first time, with additional locations planned in Foxborough and Taunton, Massachusetts.
“This region has been a strong performer for Batteries Plus with a customer base that values quality service, reliability, and expertise,” said Victor Daher, Vice President of Global Franchise Development. “The Britland family represents exactly what we look for in franchise partners: hands-on operators with a passion for their community and a commitment to building lasting customer relationships.”
The family is targeting Warwick, Rhode Island, for their next store, with plans to open within the next two years.
A True Family Business, Built for the Future
As the Britlands continue to grow, more family members are joining the operation. Josh’s brothers, Christopher and Matt, are preparing to support the expanding business.
Christopher will focus on commercial sales, an area seeing rapid growth as more organizations turn to Batteries Plus for reliable power solutions. Matt is training in-store, developing expertise in phone repair and customer service.
“As a family-run business, we’re excited about our future in Batteries Plus,” said Karen.
With more than 800 locations nationwide, Batteries Plus continues to grow through franchise partners like the Britlands, who bring national strength and local care to every community they serve.
