Batteries Plus is proud to announce that we have been selected for negotiation of a grant of over $7 million from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (DOE). This grant will enable us to lead a comprehensive, nationwide initiative to increase battery recycling dramatically.
Our Commitment to Environmental Responsibility
Batteries Plus has always been at the forefront of environmental stewardship. With over 700 locally owned stores nationwide, we’ve been a leader in battery collection and recycling for over 30 years. Our dedication to environmental responsibility is evident in the 50 million pounds of batteries we recycle yearly, including over one million growing, rechargeable, and lithium batteries.

Why We Were Chosen
The DOE recognized our extensive network of franchisees and specially trained battery professionals, who are uniquely positioned to manage the safe and environmentally responsible disposal of batteries. We’re incredibly proud of this recognition and the trust placed in us to spearhead this vital initiative.
Our CEO, Scott Williams, summed it up perfectly: “We know consumers want to do the right thing, and this grant will allow us to educate more people on how to recycle with their locally-owned Batteries Plus store.”
What’s Next? Our Plans for the Grant
Here’s a glimpse into our plans with the grant funding:
- Incentivizing Consumers to Recycle: During this program, consumers will be able to recycle batteries at Batteries Plus stores at no cost. We aim to break down the financial barriers that often deter people from recycling their batteries. This initiative will be supported by educational campaigns highlighting the environmental benefits of responsible battery disposal, with a special focus on underserved communities to ensure equitable access.
- Making Recycling Mainstream Nationwide: We’re developing a highly visible and accessible recycling workstation to streamline battery sorting and packaging. This new technology is expected to reduce labor time by 3-4 minutes per pound of batteries processed, leading to a 30% reduction in costs. We’ll also share this technology with other retailers to promote industry-wide efficiency.
- Engaging & Educating Americans: We’ll work with the DOE to launch a robust marketing campaign, leveraging partnerships with sports teams and community organizations to raise awareness about battery recycling. We’ll create educational content for schools and the general public, and consumer surveys will help refine our outreach efforts.
Looking Ahead
Before the funding is issued, we’ll undergo a negotiation process with DOE/MESC. Keep an eye out for notifications from your local Batteries Plus stores as this program rolls out across the nation in the upcoming months. For more information and to find your nearest store, visit Batteries Plus.
